Burns Night goes hand in hand with Scotch Whisky, however, for those who are looking for a delicious non-alcoholic drink to toast the occasion, Mother Root Ginger Switchel is the perfect alternative. 100% all-natural, this non-alcoholic aperitif is made with four key ingredients - a maceration of pressed ginger juice, blossom honey, organic apple cider vinegar and a hint of chilli, making it ideal for those who love revitalising drinks with a warming kick. Inspired by the age-old Anglo-American “shrub-making” tradition, the switchel is a fascinating beverage originating from the 1700s, which witnessed increased popularity during the Prohibition era. Mother Root’s Ginger Switchel is a revival of these interesting flavours, that’s been given a captivating modern twist. The perfect drink for your downtime ritual...I started eschewing alcohol when I fell pregnant with my eldest child and since then, I only enjoy the occasional tipple as there really is nothing more punishing then feeling hungover while having to look after two tiny tornados! It can become a bit boring sticking to just juice, soda or water when you're not imbibing, so I was excited to discover Mother Root, a non-alcoholic drinks brand that was founded by mumpreneur and drinks expert Bethan Higson, who launched the brand while pregnant, looking after a toddler and working a full-time job in the wine trade. She saw a gap in the market for interesting - and flavourful - non-alcoholic drinks, and Mother Root was born in her kitchen in Peckham. Ginger has long been revered for its circulatory benefits as well as helping to reduce inflammation and ease the symptoms of indigestion such as heart burn, bloating, and nausea. Apple cider vinegar helps balance the body’s pH levels and blood sugar levels and aids digestion. Honey is packed with antioxidants and is great at helping to boost your immune system. Who knew one bottle could hold so much goodness within?! An uplifting and invigorating drink, Mother Root Ginger Switchel is best enjoyed as a pre-dinner aperitif. Serve over ice with sparkling water or a light tonic, add a slice of orange and a fragrant sprig of rosemary, and you have everything you need for a refreshing drinking experience. If you fancy a tipple, it's great as a base for vodka or dark rum based cocktails. We think it would be ideal for making a traditional Dark & Stormy with a twist! Mother Root is available at www.motherroot.london.com and from quality independent retailers nationwide. Priced from £19.00 (480ml- 20 serves) or £8.90 (120ml – 5 serves). While the Christmas party season is gearing up in full swing, many people have cocktails on the brain, but we think it’s just as good a time to enjoy some non-alcoholic tipples to create a bit of balance.
We recently discovered Borrago, a naturally delicious ‘non-alcoholic spirit’ that makes a great base for a variety of mocktails, which let’s be honest, beats drinking soda and juice when you don’t want to imbibe, but would like something a little bit more festive. Designed to be mixed rather than drunk straight (it has a slightly odd taste on its own), it has a heady mix of floral and herbaceous notes that make it great for mixing with a wealth of different flavour combinations. If you're not sure what to mix it with, it's recommended to use it as a base for mocktails you would typically enjoy with either vodka or gin. Bursting with citrus and spice, we think it works really well as a base for citrus flavoured mocktail recipes. We served our Borrago with fresh grapefruit juice, which was fabulous and would make a refreshing summertime drink. Other alternatives if grapefruit's not your vibe, include Borrago and tonic, (their signature serve is 25ml Borrago with 200ml tonic), or their ‘Windfall’ mocktail, a blend of Borrago, lemon juice, elderflower syrup and cloudy apple juice. With so many options to choose from, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to discovering your favourite Borrago concoction. Borrago is available from www.borrago.com for £19.99 (500ml bottle).
