I find it difficult to find premium salmon that I really enjoy, so I when I discovered Uig Lodge Scottish Salmon (£17.99 for a small 230g hand sliced salmon pack), I was in foodie Heaven.
Winner of 3 gold stars in the Guild of Fine Food's Great Taste Awards 2014, 2013 and 2011, this salmon really is on another level. Since 1984, Uig Lodge has been hand-producing some of the finest smoked salmon that can be found in Scotland. Using only prime Scottish Atlantic Salmon from RSPCA accredited farms, the smokehouse prides itself in its unique curing process which ensures that Uig Lodge smoked salmon possesses the perfect texture and delicious flavour. Each fish is treated independently and even the prevailing weather conditions at the time of the smoke are taken into consideration to ensure optimal flavour.
The first thing you notice when you open the packet is the rich, smokiness of the salmon. As breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, I used the salmon to make a seriously indulgent Salmon Eggs Benedict. If you've never made this before, I highly recommend it!
If you're feeling really cheeky, compliment your Salmon Eggs Benedict with a chilled glass of sparkling wine. A budget friendly bubbly that I recently discovered is I Heart Cava from I Heart Wines, (available nationwide from Morrisons and Sainsbury's), a light cava that makes a nice alternative to Prosecco.
I love a good chutney to jazz up crackers, a cheeseboard or to serve as a delicious accompaniment to burgers, chicken, sandwiches and everything in between! I've recently discovered a few fabulous chutneys - The Bay Tree Farmhouse Pickle and Piccalilli and Vallum Farm Roast Garlic and Apple Chutney.
The Bay Tree chutneys
Specialists in preserves and chutneys, The Bay Tree, have a wide variety of delicious chutneys and sauces perfect for enjoying all year round. Varieties include Smokey Chipotle BBQ Sauce (made with smoke-dried jalapeño chilies and excellent for marinating meat), and Garlic & Fennel Mustard, perfect for dolloping on burgers.
Vallum Farm chutneys
Made on Vallum Farm near Hadrian's wal, this fabulous chutney is a must-have accompaniment to cheese and a tasty addition to sandwiches. For those who can't make it to the countryside to enjoy the delicious food offerings on site (including a restaurant and deli), Vallum Farm will be launching an online site soon.
Gluten Free Cracked Black Pepper Wholegrain Crackers and Gluten Free Ginger Stem Biscuit Breaks
Now I'll be honest, whenever I hear the words 'gluten free', my first thought is that it will be gross. But, to be fair, this is based on the fact that I've had some really unfortunate tasting gluten free foods in my day. So, when I received two new products from Nairn's gluten free range, I was sceptical about their tastiness factor, but I'm pleased to report that my skepticism was unfounded.
The Nairn's Gluten Free Ginger Stem Biscuits (£1.89 from select major retailers nationwide), which contain all natural ingredients and gluten free oats, are exceptionally moreish. In fact, my husband and I scoffed the entire package in about two minutes flat! Their natural goodness means they are ideal for coeliacs or those with gluten intolerances or simply purusing a 'free from' lifestyle. They are also high in fibre, helping to provide a slow release of energy throughout the day, great for when you want a healthy snack that isn't loaded with calories.
The other gluten free product I tried was the Nairn's Gluten Free Cracked Black Pepper Wholegrain Crackers (available from select retailers nationwide), made with gluten free oats. They are light and crispy and not too peppery, making them the perfect accompaniment to a cheese board or served with smoked salmon, for a healthy and indulgent snack.
