Get the five star treatment in Bournemouth
It is wonderful that we are now free to explore and travel to long-distance shores, but there is something to be said for a wonderful staycation on the beautiful southern beaches of England, which is why we jumped at the chance to stay a night at The Nici (formerly the Savoy) in Bournemouth, a new 5* hotel concept aimed at replacing fuss with fun.
Since its launch this June, the hotel has undergone a £25m refurbishment – including 10 luxury garden suites with outdoor hot tubs, an indoor cinema, and a beautifully landscaped lawn, complete with private poolside cabanas and plush loungers. With its unique clifftop location, offering extraordinary sea views and access down to Bournemouth’s award-winning sandy beaches, The Nici is just moments from the beach, a secluded spot perfect for a stylish seaside escape.
As soon as you enter the lobby, you are drawn into the inspiration of the design of the hotel, Miami’s South Beach lifestyle. There is a distinct Miami feel throughout the hotel, with bold, quirky art, palms in oversized pots, banquette seating, and knowledgeable, attentive staff clad in subtle tailoring. Bright neon art, plush sofas, wonderful drapes, and an inviting fireplace compliments a very cool collection of Mid Century Modern furniture. The hotel is light, bright, and airy with high ceilings, large windows, and a pale colour palette set off with forest green and orange accents. The cocktail bar is even a home to a grand piano, so when it comes to cool, quirky beachside chic - The Nici has it nailed.
The hotel features 70 bedrooms - guest rooms, family rooms and exquisite suites, many looking out onto the majestic sweep of Bournemouth Bay, The Purbecks to the west, and the Isle of Wight.
My room offered views straight out to the sea, and the beautifully manicured garden and pool, with a private balcony to enjoy the view. The super comfy bed was dressed in beautiful soft cotton linen, while the sofa at the end faced a free standing bath - a super touch of elegance and luxury, with views looking across the water, while the complementary rum was a super touch for an evening tipple.
The rooms house chic Miami vibe furnishings, a design that effortlessly flows throughout the hotel from the colours to the art prints. The hotel and the rooms are dog friendly with dog treats and there are even super cosy dog beds for your furry pooches to enjoy and life the high life just like you.
The bathroom was simple and stylish with a walk in shower, lovely White Company smellies and plush soft towels, bath robes and slippers.
The focus at the hotel is on the cool open plan, all day dining experience that the SouthBeach Bar & Restaurant offers, a sprawling space looking out onto a wide beach-facing terrace and the sea beyond.
The modern, delicious menu caters for all tastes – with fresh local seafood, imaginative sharing platters, tempting nibbles and mouth-watering salads. SouthBeach is the perfect spot for seafood dinners, late suppers, healthy brunches, light lunches, and celebratory drinks. The Hotel even packed a delicious picnic for me to enjoy on the beach, a super addition to what is on offer.
The local area
Bournemouth has a multitude of places to eat and drink, enjoy day time brunch and all day dining at the very cool and comfortable Urban Garden, to delicious pizzas and locally inspired cocktails at Stable Pizza. Bournemouth boasts some beautiful manicured gardens and for a bit of eccentric art nouveau take a visit to Russell Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, an art gallery and museum in Bournemouth, set in a beautiful Grade II* listed building originally known as East Cliff Hall. The garden here is also worth a visit.
