Restoration of historic Model Room and second floor private apartments revealed ...From the 19th of May, Sir John Soane’s Museum will publically open Soane’s private apartments and Model Room, located on the second floor at number 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London. The apartments have been fully restored, and have not been seen by the public in over 160 years. The rooms include Soane’s Model Room, Bedroom, Bathroom, Book Passage, Oratory and Mrs Soane’s Morning Room.
History of Sir John Soane's Museum Sir John Soane’s house, museum and library at No. 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields has been a public museum since the early 19th century. On his appointment as Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy in 1806, Soane (1753-1837) began to arrange his books, classical antiquities, casts and models so that students of architecture might benefit from access to them. In 1833 he negotiated an Act of Parliament to preserve the house and collection after his death for the benefit of ‘amateurs and students’ in architecture, painting and sculpture. Today, Sir John Soane’s Museum is one of the country’s most unusual and significant museums with a continuing and developing commitment to education and creative inspiration. Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm. Last entry 4:30pm. It is also open on the first Tuesday evening of each month from 6-9pm. Admission: Free For more information, visit http://www.soane.org. Sir John Soane’s Museum 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields London WC2A 3BP ‘You’ve got to learn the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules, but to keep the tradition’ - Alexander McQueen This carefully curated exhibition is brimming with examples of where McQueen has brought together vulgarity and beauty, modernity and tradition, sexuality and androgeny. Nowhere else would you see bondage juxtaposed with femininity, models as chess pieces or so many real life breasts in a world renowned museum. Each of the five rooms within the exhibition has a distinct flavour and showcases the brilliance of McQueen and his collections. The Cabinet of Curiosities is a real highlight and feast for the eyes. Despite the room being full of fellow visitors, there was a calm amongst us as we were in awe in the presence of such genius. TOP TIP – Arrive just before 10am and you can purchase tickets on the day. The V&A has reserved 200 tickets for the dedicated. Post visit... Ensure you stop off for a coffee in the stunning V &A Café before you step back into reality. I would also strongly recommend returning to the V&A to have a wander around the delights that the museum has to offer. I love their Friday night lates, which is a fantastic way to spend a Friday evening with friends. Ensure you check the schedule before you go as it's not on every Friday. http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/f/friday-late/ Alexander McQueen 'Savage Beauty' is on now until the 2nd of August 2015. Victoria and Albert Museum Cromwell Road London SW7 2RL Elinor Seath A world of curiosities awaits...Last weekend I found myself jumping on a train out of London to visit the Bosham Garden Art Trail. Once a year the residents of North street open up their gardens to the public and show a fantastic selection of high end garden sculptures, metal work and beautiful objects to transform your garden. The first garden I entered was home to The Bikers Pub, a quirky pub that's proud to be a finalist in the Pub Shed of the year 2015 competition. The pub is run by a lovely couple that made me feel that living an eccentric lifestyle would be so much fun. They had a family of tarantulas living in their kitchen, walls covered with paraphernalia they had collected over the years, and a fantastic pub with homemade beers in their garden, wow! To vote for them in the Pub Shed of the Year Competition, visit www.readersheds.co.uk. While the Bosham Garden art show has now wrapped, don't fret as there are plenty of fabulous sculpture parks in and around London and the Affordable Art Fair is just around the corner in June. I've listed a few of my favourites for you to enjoy...
