Our friends at Vintage Roots (www.vintageroots.co.uk) have compiled their top picks of no sulphur added wines for you to enjoy this holiday season.
DO Penedes Nosodos Xarel.lo No Added Sulphur (RRP £10.99)
Perfectly healthy selected grapes and meticulous winemaking has produced a great and authentic wine with no sulphur at all added (SODOS in Catalan relates to sulphur, so NOSODOS is 'no sulphur'). Made from 90% Xarello and 10% Chardonnay, this dry, clean white has lovely melon and citrus qualities with a big thread of Penedès minerality thoughout. Limited production only.
AOC Chinon Le Clos de la Bonneliere (RRP £12.50)
The Loire Valley is famous for its top-quality Cabernet Franc wines, and this example from Caves Plouzeau lives up to the high standard. With its floral aromas and rich flavour of black cherry, it's a unique style that pairs beautifully with a wide assortment of foods- and stands alone just as well. There are hints of redcurrants and morello cherries and there is a lot of ripeness and flavour, but it retains the fresh leafiness of Cabernet Franc. One of the best wines to pair with the classic dish "Coq au Vin".
Insieme Nero D’Avola No Added Sulphur (RRP £9.25)
'Insieme' means 'together' in Italian and signifies the partnership between this winery and the Stellar winery in South Africa, which is a leading organic and fair trade estate, also specialising in 'No Sulphur Added' (NSA) wines. Soft and supple with rich depth, and a lingering smooth black cherry fruit finish.
Stellar Merlot No Added Sulphur (RRP £7.99)
Deep, bright colour and ripe fruit on the nose with hints of jasmine and dark perfume. The wine has well-structured tannins from a post-ferment maceration. There is no wood influence, only ripe organic Merlot grapes.
Waverley Hills No Added Sulphites Cabernet Sauvignon (RRP £9.75)
Superb addition to our growing number of 'NS' wines. Carefully hand picked and destemmed, the absence of sulphur raises the fruity, red berry and flower aromas, keeps the colour intensity and enriches and balances the palate. Best drunk young and fresh.
No Added Sulphur Toscar Tempranillo (RRP £7.75)
This "Rioja" grape excels in the hot arid central plains of La Mancha. It is ripe, black fruit forward and juicy with soft tannins and a fine clean finish.
Albet i Noya Nosodos Sparkling (No added Sulphur) (RRP £16.99)
Quality no added sulphur sparkling wine from Penedès in Spain, the top Spanish region for sparkling wine. This top-calibre Xarel.lo sparkling wine is made without any sulphites added, allowing the aromas and flavours to fully express themselves. This gives a very ‘pure’, fruity taste to the wine, which is very enjoyable. The grapes are harvested by hand, and vinified in an oxygen-free, 100% hygienic process. It is aged for a year to give a gentle fizz and soft mouthfeel. Made in very limited quantities – get some while you can!
Limited Release No Added Sulphur Organic White (£8.75)
This wine does it all: No Added Sulphur, organic, fair trade and vegan friendly, but it's more than just a box-ticker. This 100% Colombard is only made in the best vintages (so get it while you can!) and shows a lovely wild flower and honey nose and real tangy freshness on the finish. It has a deeper colour than one would expect in such a young wine, which is because sulphur has a bleaching effect on the colour of 'normal' wines.
Terrae SO2 Free Garnacha Bodegas Tempore (£9.99)
A limited edition new ‘No Sulphur Added’ organic red from Spain, that’s just sensational. From 100% Grenache (Garnacha) grown in the Bajo Aragón region to the west of Catalonia and Barcelona. Tempore means time, and this wine is the result of four generations of viticulturists caring for the organic vines, and making wine as naturally as possible, and without sulphur.
Marca Trevigiana No Added Sulphur Merlot (RRP £8.25)
A welcome, well priced addition to the Vintage Roots 'No Sulphur Added' (NS) range. Soft ripe and easy to enjoy, the purity comes through, which is what this style of wine is all about.
Teillery No Sulphites Added Cabernet Sauvignon (RRP £9.99)
Very natural expression of Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon from an award winning winery that was the first in Chile to have pushed the boundaries and gone sulphur free. This 'aged' Cabernet has attractive, juicy, sweet blackcurrant fruit, with soft background tannins. The estate recommends enjoying this wine slightly below room temperature, and decanting or aerating first to let the wine fully open up.
Cuvée Secrete No Added Sulphur (RRP £8.99)
This amazing new No Added Sulphur 60% Merlot 40% Cabernet Franc red from the sun-drenched South of France has intense Merlot based black fruit flavours with notes of plum & herbal garrigue spice singing from the Cabernet Franc. A great wine in its purest unadulterated form.
